The Project “Powerful Together – Violence Prevention for Women from a Refugee Background and Female Family Migrants”

Description

Female refugees make up a disproportionate number of victims of (domestic) violence, but they have insufficient information about their rights in Germany and often lack access to the regular support services. Language barriers, uncertain residency prospects, precarious living conditions and psychological and economic dependency as a result of their flight make it even more difficult for them to deal with violence in its various forms. In addition, structurally violent living conditions such as communal accommodation foster conflict and violence. Moreover, the intersection of different forms of discrimination (such as sexism, racism, ableism, queerphobia, etc.) also makes it more difficult for women from a refugee background and female family migrants to settle in.

The project aims to identify and ameliorate access barriers to the existing regular services through workshops and exchange in various formats with women refugees* and female family migrants* in the two districts of Jerichower Land and Stendal. In addition, it aims to increase awareness about the issue among staff of asylum and residence law advice services and women's counseling services as well as strengthen cooperation between these services and better tailor it to the women’s needs. This will entail organizing workshops and regular information exchange meetings for both groups, offering orientation and referral advice, and developing information material.

Our goals are

  • Empowerment against discrimination
  • Creating possibilities for self-organization
  • Pertinent information resources for all parties involved

We offer

  • Knowledgeable and committed referral advice across all relevant support mechanisms
  • Access to information on the topics of protection from violence and self-organization in several languages
  • Educational and information events about protection from violence, self-organization and anti-discrimination

Project duration

January 1, 2023 – January 31, 2026
